Following last year’s inception of Phuture Shock Excursions, the new vinyl-only imprint returns with a stellar remix package of Bristolian producer OPR8’s ‘Call To Riddle’ featuring Autumn Music, which appeared in its original form on the inaugural EXCURSIONS 12”.
For this release the Bristol label look to both sides of the pacific for their remix commissions, which come courtesy of Californian husband-and-wife duo - Peaking Lights, renowned for their signature fusion of cosmic dub and synth-laden dreampop via critically acclaimed LP’s on the likes of LA’s Not Not Fun and Domino sub-label Weird World. Secondly on board is Tokyo-based Sapphire Slows - an artist borne out of the burgeoning ‘bedroom producer’ electronic scene of her home city a few years ago, who has since built a more global profile having also released music on Not Not Fun and 100% Silk.
Gracing the A-side is Peaking Lights rendition, who elevate the track to Balearic realms, crafting a proto-house inspired re-rub driven by a slow-burning groove formed around a sprinkling of quirky Italo disco-esque synth hooks, dubby bass and remnants of the original vocal, tastefully underpinned by a bed of jaunty percussion, thus creating a hypnotic, tribal motion aimed at the insomniacs of the after-hours dancefloors. While on the flip Sapphire Slows maintains the melancholy essence of OPR8’s original, yet puts an even darker spin on it, adding a sinister synth bass riff interlocked with a skeletal 4/4 drum rhythm, and trading in much of Autumn Music’s original vocals for her own ghostly coos that drift in and out of a haze of reverb and haunting piano notes, akin to being trapped in a liminal space between a recurring nightmare and borderline insanity.
