Based in Queensland, Australia, Nerang Recordings has put out music from Interplanetary Criminal, Subjoi, DJ Swagger, DJ Bowlcut, J. Albert, Cassettes For Kids, and many more since its inception in 2016. Reaching five years of the imprint, head honcho Dj Whipr Snipr curates the second ‘Freaky Friends’ compilation, featuring contributions from a host of label associates and hotly tipped producers for six fast-paced, heavy-hitting tracks
Leading the release, Shall Not Fade and E-Beamz affiliate DJ Swagger’s ‘Hoticewater’ blends deep oscillations with skipping breaks and shimmering pads, with Low Tape’s ‘So Delicious’ following, keeping the energy high. Striking vocals meet trippy FX and electro-tinged drum patterns across the track, a continuation of the DJ/producer’s releases on the likes of X-Kalay and Of Paradise. Fresh off the back of their recent ‘Sportsgoth’ EP, Brazil’s Nørus and Dj Whipr Snipr collide once more on ‘Molecular Collision’, bringing classic 808 kits, acid lines, and squelchy synthesisers together.
Classic electro sounds meet modern production techniques on LA-based Ole Mic Odd’s ‘In The House’, as robotic vocal lines meet heavy arps. Ramping up the tempo, Berlin-based Nasty Enterprises boss Nasty King Kurl returns to the label with a fast and powerful off-kilter jam, leaning on freaked out vocals and tough percussion. Rounding out the release, Cologne’s Turk Turkelton offers up ‘Offenbachs Father’, delivering a track complete with razor-sharp drum workout and expressive synth work.
Nørus & Dj Whipr Snipr team up for the electro-tinged ‘Sporthsgoth’ this October on Nerang Recordings. Queensland based DJ/producer and label head Dj Whipr Snipr has been running Nerang Recordings since 2016, putting out music from the likes of Interplanetary Criminal, Subjoi, DJ Swagger, DJ Bowlcut, J. Albert, Cassettes For Kids, and many more since its inception. Teaming up with Brazilian DJ/producer and Gestalt Records alumni Nørus here, the duo air their first collaborative works on ‘Sportsgoth’, a hard-hitting EP taking inspiration from Breaks, Electro, Techno and beyond. Leading the A-side, ‘Something Better’ opens with deep, hypnotic pads and sharp drums alongside modulating low end, while ‘Gravel Or Grovel’ sees the duo maintain the emotive electro atmosphere, with flickering synth licks, dreamy pads, and rubbery bass laid across rough, staggering drums. On the flip, ‘1000 Forward 5000 Back’ brings a series of glitched-out FX and warped electronics before ‘Sportsgoth’, which features Scotland’s Chordata, closes the releases with chopped up vocal samples, high octane leads, and rattling drum machines. Nørus & Dj Whipr Snipr ’Sporthsgoth’ drops in October on Nerang Recordings.

Following releases on 777 Recordings, Low Income Squad, as well as his own Nasty Enterprises imprint, Nasty King Kurl sets his sights to Queensland’s finest for the energetic and head-turning ‘Weak Lips’ EP.
Taking inspiration from Breaks, UK Garage, Electro and beyond, Nasty King Kurl combines this myriad of influences with a skill for crafting character-filled yet devastatingly effective dancefloor cuts, striking a careful balance between club functionality and enjoyable at-home listening.
A-side opener ‘All I Want’ sees chopped breaks and vocals permeating monstrous low end, leading into title cut ‘Weak Lips’, which lays soft Rhodes chords under G-funk whistles and crunchy percussion. On the flip, ‘Low Carb Bitches’ brings cheeky hip hop vocals under squelching bass and freestyle-esque scratches and chops, before closing track ‘Make Tech House Great Again’ carries warped samples, dense percussion and swirling FX to round out the release.
DJ Swagger returns to Nerang Recordings with ‘Bass Hysteria’ this January. Following releases on E-Beamz, Natural Sciences, and Who’s Susan, the German-based DJ Swagger returns to Nerang after appearing on the label’s ‘Freaky Friends Volume 1’ compilation earlier this year, bringing yet another bout of high quality, high energy output to the table.
Merging influences from Dance Mania through to UK Garage, ‘Bass Hysteria’ sees the DJ Swagger at the top of his game. ‘Atomic Fear’ galvanizes the pure energy of early DJ Funk, with air raid sirens and glitched out hi-hats punctuated throughout, while ‘Drybones’ nods towards early dubstep and UK flavours, with gurgling basslines and skippy drums bubbling throughout as occasional glimmers of gorgeous synth work allow the listener to come up for air.
‘Trail of Destruction’ encapsulates golden age electro, with effected vocals, crisp percussion, and gritty basslines coming together for a late night groover. ‘Noseblunt’ is a fast-paced whirlwind, aimed for fog-filled dance floors, perfectly wrapping up the eleventh release on a label pushing diverse sounds from artists around the world.
DJ Swagger ‘Bass Hysteria’ lands on Nerang Recordings in April 2021.
The return of our VA series is marked with the new chapter ‘Freaky Friends Volume 1’ featuring the likes of P.Leone, Nasty King Kurl, Sentient State, Ole Mic Odd, Dj Swagger, and Main Phase.
The Berlin-based label has been going strong since its founder - Australian DJ and producer Dj Whipr Snipr - launched it in 2016, with recent genre-spanning releases traversing acid, house, breaks, and electro from artists such as DJ Bowlcut, Low Tape, Soela, Subjoi, Interplanetary Criminal, J.Albert, DJ Safeword, Anthony Fade, and many more. Nerang now invites six quality artists for its most ambitious release yet to inaugurate the imprint’s ‘Freaky Friends’ series. E-Missions founder and Rekids regular P.Leone leads the way with a thudding breaks number called ‘Parting Currents’. A rumbling bassline is later joined by lush pads and a hammering piano melody destined to rocket listeners into new heights. Following appearances on 777 Recordings and Low Income Squad, Nasty King Kurl is next with a raw sounding ‘Lawless’ - a syncopated cut that blends acid and electro with Memphis rap and R&B.
In fine form off the back of releasing on Hilltown Disco and 99cts RCRDS, Nerang veteran Ole Mic Odd brings a sweaty Ghetto House stomper named ‘Hydro Anthem’ complete with a gritty acid bassline and Pointdexter-esque chopped vocals, making way for Sentient State’s ‘4 Tha Freaks’ which exhibits the New York-based artist’s softer side as he layers lush pads on top of a stripped back electro rhythm for pure euphoria.
With releases on Natural Sciences, Who’s Susan and E-Beamz, Germany-based producer Dj Swagger ups the energy, clocking in with the compilation’s fastest track in a bouncing Chicago House inspired cut entitled ‘The Phone Talky’. Tying it all together, Warehouse Raves and ec2a artist Main Phase’s ‘Get Higher’ is a punchy UK garage track complete with thudding 909 kicks, purring bass, fluttering vocals and rave stabs.
Following previous releases on Shall Not Fade and KOMPAKT, Soela will release her debut on Australia-via-Berlin imprint Nerang Recordings with the ‘Downfall’ EP.
The EP showcases the studio and creative mastery of the Russia-born and Berlin-based artist, who has years of experience as a pianist and vocalist under her belt.
Spanning five tracks, Downfall EP sees Soela team up with Berlin-based DJ and producer Module One, and Nerang head honcho Whipr Snipr. The release also features a remix from Ukrainian artist, Saturated Color.
The title track is deep house at its finest, showcasing otherworldly atmospheres, serene chords and Soela’s blissful piano, which has been a staple throughout her productions. Up next, ‘Cabinet’ featuring Module One features echoing, magical synths and thumping percussion working in perfect harmony.
On the flip side, ‘Golden Hour’ is the quintessential afterhours track that would be at home at daytime raves and summer festivals alike.
The Saturated Colour remix gives the title track a darker twist, adding an acid house synthline that’s in perfect synch with the track’s dreamy atmospheres and enchanting beats.
Wrapping things up, ‘Hide From Love’ sees Soela team up with Whipr Snipr to deliver a piano meets acid house tune that beckons us to get down on the dancefloor and dance with our eyes closed.
Berlin via Gold Coast label Nerang Recordings makes an exciting return with a strong debut from Russian producer Low Tape. Spanning blistering Detroit-tinged electro through italo-indebted melodies, ‘Reality Zone' makes for a versatile 6 tracker that does damage on both sweaty dancefloors and early night build-ups.
Low Tape has already built a strong catalog of thoughfully moody electro and house on labels such as X-Kalay and Further Electronix but he raises the bar on his Nerang debut. Straight out of the gate, opener “Funky Detune" weaves metallic and acid sequences that bend at the seams while an electro backbone drives the heat. The EP is full of those kind of highlights and special bangers like “Dangerous Groove” and “East Dancer” show the clear force that is Low Tape's ability to summon smooth and slippery soundscapes that exude serious grit and personality.
Staples of Nerang; Ole Mic Odd and Grey People melt together in the 5 track EP.
Ole goes in hard showcasing his diversity in the music scene. This guy is on a hot tip, catch while you can! Grey People follows on the B also showing he's not shy of making the lush dreamy number but then he brings it home on the final track with a classic Grey People belter.
Originating from Adelaide while performing and producing as half of the duo ‘Warren Raww’, Hank YM got his start by throwing a string of events in the well catered establishment ‘Sugar Nightclub’. While supporting and hosting the likes of Funkineven, Damiano Von Erkcert, Mark Grusane and Florist, ambition turned more towards production in 2017. Taking inspiration from fellow Adelaide musicians such as Mic Mills, Arthur Miles and Freddie Norwood (Untzz Records), the focus in Hank’s sound has always been to create a unique experience, with sets flowing from roots percussion through to house and disco. First debuting with a strong release on Australian Label ‘Centre Source Records’, ‘Wabi-Sabi’ placed focus on percussion and lush chords inspired from Japanese aesthetic.
Hank then released on UK imprint ‘Dansu-Discs’ that has been met with praise from all parts of the globe. After completing a series of shows in UK/Europe late 2017 (under both alias’) and playing alongside some notable names such as DMX Krew and Asquith (Lobster records), Hank now settles back in the musical melting pot of Melbourne. With releases in the works for 2018 under the two projects, the future is promising for the young up and comer
