A1) We start with a very interesting soundscape that encompasses pitched down vocals over a really deep atmospheric backdrop that really has a lovely relaxing feel to it, maybe slightly disconcerting as the vox adds a kind of otherworldly suspense throughout.
A2) Heading out to the second outing on this EP, with what sounds like excellent field recordings that capture a very East Indian type of vibe; lush bird song and general ambience of the area in which the sounds have been recorded.
B1) A quickening rhythm, glitch sounds and eerie soundscape that kind of utilises the captured field recordings here, very quiet and delicate electronic synth sounds are very much in the background, very nicely done.
B2) This tune has a more energetic vibe going on with nice hypnotic percussion and growing synth sounds that have a edgy quality, a well structured groove that moves along at a good pace, an odd but lovely track.
B3) A deep and atmospheric end to the EP again using quality recordings over lovely drifting sounds that are held back in the mix, this really creates a very visual filmic vibe, a haunting vocal adds a kind of spooky almost Bioshock video game atmosphere.
Overall the EP really has a contemplative feel and would be suited to a thoughtful and laid back listening session.

A1 – Searching: Prequel starts the EP with a very live sounding jazz house noodling affair, vocoder vox samples drift over a funky freestyle bass and supporting percussion. This is wrapped in soft stab sounds and retro pad atmospherics that have a laid back sophistication to them, very Sunday afternoon chilling in a café stroking your beard.
A2 – Fidelio: This track has a more traditional house structure albeit with a certain swing to the percussion, a lush kick drum sound drives the track along with tappy percussive vibes bolted to it. The use of jazz style stabs is evident again on this tune and the minimalistic way in which they are used has a really sense of space within the track.
B1 – Michelle: Oscillating synth sounds are the order of the day here and the way that they progress into the main body of the track is very innovative and done with class. An eerie main pad sound rises up through the mix of the tune and adds a suspense to the more soothing lead sounds. The percussive element of the track has a great groove to it and adds a kind of half step vibe through the main 4 / 4 structure.
B2 – The Test Dream: The EP closes with a kicked back track that slows everything down, focusing on more of a looped sample style that uses a downtempo breakbeat kind of atmosphere over the looping lead sounds. The mix of percussion on the track is well thought out going from a very traditional house style into the offbeat breaks and back again really works well and has an originality to it.
Polite Strangers EP by Prequel has definitely got the laid back vote for people who love their tunes to have the certain jazzed smoky style and vibe to them, the is a lot of innovation on this EP and the way that the tracks form as a whole is very cool indeed, well worth adding to the collection.

A1 – Hi Scores: Lets start with the title track from the EP and this has got a great atmosphere about it, very melancholic vibes are present with this noodle of a tune. Eerie pad and synth sounds are awash and create a mysterious presence, distorted 8 bit glitch beats filter up and down as the tune moves along, a very haunting tune that oozes quality.
A2 – Turquoise Hexagon Sun: Things move to a more downtempo almost space trip hop sound with this one, ice covered breakbeats chug along in a very relaxed way with glassy deep and soulful sounds playing away over the top. A capture of some general conversations and chit chat add to the laid back feel and the flow of the tune really is a thoughtful and peaceful affair.
A3 – Nlogax: Here we go down the retro 80’s electro avenue, this is a great track that has a very solid analog bass and synth styling’s that will make you think of the days gone by (if you're that old ha ha) Cool wave in its conception, this track really does stand out, the beats are very regimented as you would expect from a track that is from this period of time, a class production that is exceptional from start to finish.
B1 – June 9th: More industrial as far as beat structure and bass sounds go this tune has more urgency about it, metallic percussive hits keep you on edge of your seat but the track does not feel heavy, this is probably because the soundscape used softens the overall feel of the tune. Again this nods its head at retroville as far as the synth sounds go and the way that they are laid out, another winner from BOC here.
B2 – Seeya Later: Slow and mellow discordant sounds are the ever present on this piece, moody and slightly disturbed the atmosphere on Seeya Later does hold a kind of odd mysticism. The beats here are on the downtempo side of things and have a snap to them, this does create a good overall energy on the tune and keeps things flowing.
B3 – Everything You Do Is A Balloon: The EP closes with a very chilled and calming piece, this deep and well conceived track has you from the beginning, very smooth beat work is accompanied with a wonderful sound set of uplifting and quality noises that range from moving strings and subtle horn like sounds to soft delicate stabs.
Closing thoughts are that this is a great EP that really captures the whole Boards Of Canada vibe, if you are already a fan then this is a must buy, if you are new to their sound then check it out as its proper music for your mind with a bit of a head nodding to be had along the way.

A1 – Faux, John Beltran : This original version of Faux has a loose, almost natural vibe to it. The use of guitar sounds that pluck away over quirky kick drums and percussive elements work together to hypnotic effect. The addition of distorted synth leads that have an acid like quality to them adds a sense of depth. This is a very thought provoking track and the placement of every component part is well imagined.
B1 – Faux (Four Tet Remix) : The remix as you would expect adds a touch of class to the already tidy original. The groove on this remix is superb and is a more structured tight snappy affair. The guitar sound has been mashed up and has a slight bit crushed feel, not over done though. The way that the delicate chimes reveal themselves is very special indeed, they sound so delicate and fragile. Four Tet adds a great sub bass to the mix and this really rounds off the overall sound of the remix.
This is a great experimental EP that has definitely got the dance floor in mind. The grooves here are solid, and various individuals will most certainly throw odd shapes on nights out on the town. Well done to John Beltran and Four Tet on this lush slab of vinyl.

A1 – Archway: The Fragments EP starts with a really deep ambient piece called Archway, this track has some amazing textures and ambiences that have a very thought provoking sit back and chill vibe. Great soundscape and synth work really gel together well, lovingly crafted softened percussion hold the atmospherics up in the air...
A2 – Fragments: The title track on the EP keeps the deepness flowing, this has a more uplifting feel as far as beat structure goes but retaining the spacey and other worldly pads and synthetic sounds. Filtered brush beats grow out of the atmosphere and keep your attention as they do, proper track for the deep heads out there.
B1 – Lost Object: takes us down the more downtempo road whilst retaining the depth of the previous pieces. More punchy beats are present with a noodle bassline that swings and filters through the tune; the atmosphere here is still in the underwater camp as far as soundscape goes but having a certain edgy quality to it. Another winner here from Kiyoko.
B2 – Headlights: The Fragments EP ends with another slice from the depths of a mine shaft - plucked reverb guitars with dream like washes and pads take you away from the reality of life and sends you to the stars! So much soul and beauty, the quality of sounds used here are simply stunning.
Kiyoko has captured the ambient vibe to perfection, if you like ambient music and tracks with a very otherworldly vibe then this simply is a no brainer and a must have in your bag.
