Following on from the success of HOTPLATES001, featuring Germany’s OTZ, comes the boutique Portsmouth-based label’s second release – from noted Bristol producer Theo Bennett, aka Sepia.
At the forefront of dubstep’s current generation of producers, Sepia has received heavyweight support from the likes of Mala, Joe Nice and Truth, with a take on the genre that ranges from moody, melodic dub-hymns through to full throttled club tracks.
Taking his influence from both the cream of British electronic music, with key touchstones being Burial and Bristol contemporaries like Kahn, as well as the elegiac post-rock of Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky, Sepia crafts beats that are fraught with emotion.
Previous releases have come courtesy of labels including System, Gourmet Beats, Deep, Dark and Dangerous, Wheel and Deal Records and Infernal Sounds.
Side A, ‘Noise Test’, is an atmospheric roller; its eerie rising horns complemented by a discordant drone to create a sub-testing heater that could sit easily in both grime and dubstep mixes.
Side B calls to mind the early releases of Digital Mystikz, with hissing snares and broken beat disintegration submerged under wobbling dub pressure.
Hotplates Recordings places its emphasis on the roots of UK electronic music culture, having grown out of a regular show on Portsmouth pirate and online station Lush FM. With this release the label further cements its status as a key part of the UK underground.

Following an earth-rattling release from Gramz, the Crucial Recordings imprint returns to administer generous doses of its characteristically standard-setting and ever-expanding sonic offerings with CRUCIAL020. Standing as the second compilation release from the label, CRUCIAL020 features the stylings of new Crucial family members TMSV and Van Dam as well as tracks from some of its longer standing lineage Causa, Opus and label-head Sleeper. The highly prolific and bass-centric label has build themselves a resounding reputation within the underground scene for pushing their unprecedented mission for delivering multifaceted and boundary shattering bass music, with CRUCIAL020 proving as the newest groundbreaking addition to their vision.
Introducing the unorthodox and infectious 020 compilation are Crucial newcomers TMSV and Van Dam with their collaboration entitled “Qanun Fodder,” oozing with musical aptitude, raw baseline energy and a rugged aesthetic. Mixing organic and electronic elements, “Qanun Fodder” boasts a sub-powered, percussive-rich personality not confined by one specific genre. Causa continues to unlatch the release with “Are We,” a highly original dancefloor detonator that boasts strong roots in dubstep’s foundational sound. While “Are We” delivers proper traditionally meditative sound system might, it doesn’t shy away from delivering a fresh and dark perspective that strives for innovation. Standing as a climax to CRUCIAL020 is labelhead Sleeper’s “Ginger Root.” Wielding an infectious melody and impossibly heavy sub bass presence, “Ginger Root” showcases Sleeper’s years of technical and creative prowess coupled with his irreplicable knack for exploration and freshness. Culminating CRUCIAL020 is Opus’s “People,” laden with his signature percussion and dynamic melodic heat, echoing the producer’s history as a classically trained musician. Confined within its four rousing tracks, CRUCIAL020 is bursting at the seams with weighty and innovative beats that abandon all stylistic expectations with its addictive, future-facing grooves.

Emerged out of the subculture melting pot of St. Louis, Missouri (US) - Dub Sector has been wreaking havoc as fierce proponents of Dubstep and sound system culture as a collective of likeminded artists, event series and record label. Following up on the imprint’s debut vinyl by REZ, the subsequent release is spearheaded by UK’s Chad Dubz. Besides running his own accomplished ‘Foundation Audio’ imprint, the capable artist has been ceaselessly showcasing his talent with prolific output on various esteemed outlets, including the likes of Boka Records.
Setting the needle on the groove, vinyl distortion subsides into a dystopian soundscape, riddled with distant feedback swells and nebulous ambience. Thrusted into its staccato sub bass barrage, ‘Reptilian Bitch’ leaves no air untouched as its expertly crafted groove keeps you in full swing. Infused with all the right old-school flavours, Chad Dubz’ music armaments never fail to ignite a proper dance. Further treading the path of conveying full force in minimal attire, ‘Wob’ picks up the pace with ease. Led on by its hypnotic lead melody, listeners find themselves in an auditory sound-boy funeral in midst of vintage dub sirens and delay trails.
On remix duties, bass music heavyweight collective LSN with a monumental spin on the EP’s title track. Subdued harmonies bond with delicate foley samples, the faint sounds of destruction slowly catching up with the passage of time. Pouncing into undiluted fury, the proceeding sonic mayhem shines in full glory. Rounding things off with a final industrious belter of a track, ‘Rollin’’ takes no prisoners committing tribal warfare at one-hundred-forty beats per minute. Haunting foley samples make way for a percussive inferno of undoubtedly massive proportions, concluding the EP in fine style.

ZamZam 67 sees the eagerly-awaited return of the man called Versa (AKA Michael Nickless AKA Michael Versa). Over 10 years deep in the dub game, Versa came to prominence through a string of mesmerizing releases, notably a pair of singles on VIVEK’s System label. His first outing on ZamZam (alongside partner Rowl on the B side) went down a treat worldwide - hard to believe it was fully two dozen ZamZams ago! It’s always a special kind of pleasure to have an artist back for a second chapter, and this one is a must.
“Seed” opens with the sound of distant thunder, minimal pads, and a time-honored bass & kick combination, elemental steppers for the ages making no concessions to fashion or trend. Melodica drives through the storm, with delicately plucked guitar and FX bubbling to the surface in a reverb-soaked landscape. Much more than the sum of its parts, “Seed"’s power is in its restraint, its knowledge of its roots, and its confidence in the timeless quality of well-tuned instruments and careful dub mixing.
“Planting” inches the tempo up yet feels much slower, lulling us into a hazy world of lurching half-time magic, with all the same instrumentation in dynamic play, yet creating wildly contrasting results. With chasms of reverb, smeared snares and guitar taking a much greater role in the shimmering dubwise play of absence and presence, dappled light and twilight dark, “Planting” will pitch up nicely for an unforgettable appearance in a next 140 set.
Versa’s deep knowledge of dub and reggae, along with his masterful approaches to techno and deep bass music more generally, makes every release a powerful yet understated event for sound system addicts.

Invoking imagery of condensed, interstellar warfare - Dayzero takes command of the controls for Sentry Records’ eighth release. Based in Japan, the acclaimed producer follows up on his substantial outings for Wheel & Deal and Hatched Music among others - having continuously refined his highly effective compound of Dubstep with vocal support from the scene’s vital tastemakers. Now joining the Sentry roster with two monumental armaments, the newest signee shows us how it’s done. Enrichening the sound system music scene with a no-nonsense production style as well as his innovative, experimental approach - all killer, no filler.
Taking off to another dimension in ’Sunday on Spaceship’, listeners are met with feigned lo-fi soundscapes, carved out of analogue noise and detuned echoes. A state of overt tension dissolves into Dayzero firing up the heavy weaponry with stripped down sub bass tremors and meticulously crafted off-kilter groove. Amongst granular, apocalyptic percussion reverberating voices of days past flicker. Diverse drum instrumentation and supple distortion keep it lively, a no-questions-asked onslaught and guaranteed way to light up any dance.
Flipping over to the B-Side, we’re placed on the receiving end of another ton of musical napalm. Finding ourselves being churned through bare concrete, laced with psychedelics. ‘Down By Law’ oozes of sonic variance, as industrial plucks shine through the cracks - furthering the aberration alongside narcotic staccato arpeggios. Subtle use of eerie harmonies and surging feedback wails is firmly kept in check by brute-force kicks and snares - ceremonious pressure underneath. Venting high-pressure 808’s amidst supremely crafted breaks, leaving us yearning for more. A pair of mean-spirited sound-bwoy murder tracks on a twelve-inch platter - enough said!

At the frontier of Dub in digital style, Moonshine Recordings advances their critically acclaimed LP series, embracing the sounds of French producer and true-to-the-roots live artist Miniman. Fierce proponent of sound system music for more than two decades, the veteran is at it again in full force. A journey through his musical universe - embedded within the varied sonic nature of Dub, strictly rigged for the dance floor.
Procuring an immense sense of space, ‘Path of Stars’ leaves listeners mingling with interstellar harmonica melodies on a firm foundation of low frequency movement, striking just the right chord skanks. Roots vocalist Murray Man spearheads ‘From Creation’ on a militant groove, topped off by eerie theremin fragments and crystal-clear harmonies. ‘Ascension’ profoundly turns up the heat as radical chord stabs intersperse with its zealous bass line - a no holds barred conquest. Hurled into a spiritual heavyweight meditation, flute arpeggios lead the way towards ‘Ancestors’ in a rootikal Stepper’s fashion. ‘Galactica’ ramps up the energy as its rocket-like trajectory sends you off into its high-energy sub combustion, making way for the next, subsequent sound system belter. ‘Marching Dub’ takes hold of every last fibre of your body, as its ample effectuation takes care of the rest. Returning for one more, Murray Man chants lyrical wisdom in ‘Nough A Dem Afraid Away’ - conscious lyrics on a sublime, instrumental foundation.
Resonant filter sweeps introduce the royal march of ‘Knights of Dub’ - high-velocity movements in action as the assertive soundscape roams free and unrestrained, assuredly causing havoc in the dance.
