KMD (Kausing Much Damage, or a positive Kause in a Much Damaged society) was a Hip Hop group in the early 90s perhaps best known for launching the career of acclaimed MC/Producer MF Doom (known during his KMD tenure as Zev Love X). After guesting on 3rd Bass’ “The Gas Face,” the trio (Zev, brother Subroc, and Onyx) released the acclaimed and overlooked “Mr. Hood” full-length.  Their  political outlook  was  similar  to  the  group  Brand  Nubian,  who  guested  on  Hood; however,  the  style  was more  comical  and  included  a  great  deal  of  clips  from old  children’s  recordings,  mostly  notably  a  sample  of  the  Seaseme  Street character Bert on the single “Who Me?” This is the official Elektra Records/Traffic Entertainment Group re-release with original artwork  and track listing in it’s entirety. Cutting edge, ahead of it’s time production and skits from KMD and Stimulated Dummies (John Gamble  and Mr. Dante Ross). Features the singles Peachfuzz”, “Who Me?” and “Nitty Gritty” (feat. Brand Nubian). This is one Rap album that  is  not  to  be  missed.

Five years into the project, with two acclaimed albums and dozens of triumphant international performances to its name, Yermande announces a thrilling new phase for this Dakar-Berlin collaboration: emphatically a giant step forward. The group of players is boiled down to twelve for recordings, eight for shows; sessions in Dakar become steeply more focussed. ‘This time around I was better able to specify what I wanted right from the initial recording sessions in Dakar,’ says Ernestus; 'and further in the production process I took more freedom in reducing and editing audio tracks, changing MIDI data, replacing synth sounds and introducing electronic drum samples.’ Right away you hear music-making which has come startlingly into its own. Rather than submitting to the routine, discrete gradations of recording, producing and mixing, the music is tangibly permeated with deadly intent from the off. Lethally it plays a coiled, clipped, percussive venom and thumping bass against the soaring, open-throated spirituality of Mbene Seck’s singing. Plainly expert, drilled and rooted, the drumming is unpredictable, exclamatory, zinging with life. Likewise the production: intuitive and fresh but utterly attentive; limber but hefty; vividly sculpted against a backdrop of cavernous silence. Six chunks of stunning, next-level mbalax, then, funky as anything.

The Dubster is an alias of drum and bass legend L Double. Released originally in 1993 on Edzy (Unique 3) label No Noise.

This EP has been a highly collectable bit of vinyl for many years and a tricky one to hunt down. It captures the vibe of the era from the Huddersfield area of the UK. As Lee Double explains: 

“The ‘Lighter Shades Of Dark’ EP was started at the RAID studios in Huddersfield. But during the making of the EP I moved to my studio to Bradford as I had started a distribution company called Wax Works which was based in Bradford. I did the distro in the day and worked at night on music. We did 1000 units and they all sold. I use to swap spare stock and whites labels with DJ SS too. I would take what he had and then I would put them into my distribution company and help sell them for him. I covered all around Yorkshire, down to Nottingham, but I also drove up to the borders of Scotland, visiting all the record shops, leaving records with them on sale or return. We were seriously spreading the word, looking back we were running things up here!”

Pressed on Aquatic Blue vinyl, this is a limited run of 300 units, presented in the attractive Vinyl Fanatiks housebag.

In 1993, Andy C & Ant Miles set out about creating a fourth release for the newly established Ram Records, now just a year old.  With Hardcore still prominent in the clubs around the world, The Touch features rollercoaster bass swoops against energetic breaks flowing around the main sung vocal "c'mon and touch me". An early sign of the precision arrangements that became synonymous of Ram's early sound that followed over for many years. Whilst going through the remaining samples in the sampler that had not been used on the A side, the pair suddenly went on a tangent with one of the drum breaks. Experimenting with the new timestretch function in the Akai sampler, they soon had a shuffle groove layered and moving. With Ant Miles' sculpted and edited arpeggio bell line sample, a new overall sound and vibe was beginning to emerge out of their studio Atari ST computer. Utilising an original organic analogue string pad, the haunting sinister vibe became complete. With the vocal from the BBC QED documentary 'Glimpses of Death' - "I felt, like I was in a long dark tunnel" all that remained was one of the most memorable pounding bass lines to sit underneath it all. The result was an instant impact on the scene, heralded as one of the first anthems of the Jungle genre. Multi award-winning and the track that cemented Andy & Ant and their label Ram Records within the scene.

We are writing the year 3021. The very first gene-manipulated virus-free post-covidians made it to carry their infra speakers back onto earths surface to play sublows for the concrete jungles, or whats left of them at least. They brought their ancient rituals and lullabies from their dungeons: sounding like a dark future of Dub without nice and happy skanking where only ruff and rugged dirty bone structures have remained the centuries below the planet's crust.

The tribe's chief a.k.a. The Duke Of Dub hands down two bare riddims with a jukey groove, highly detailed breakbeat layers and anything closely dubby only greeting from a very far mountain of suffaration:

Everyting Gwan In opens like an easy halftime beat, but sucks the listeners into its roughness quite fast, allowing no breath or sun inside between all them sinister soundscapes and speech scraps. Fight Dub appears to be fried in the same pan at first, but got a slightly more stepping bass, lifting the classic breaks and vocal bits up into a merciless footwerk climax towards the end. Jah man!
