‘Chance Is Our Greatest Ally’ celebrates the launch of Faux Poly, a brand new label from Kassian

The label name pays tribute to a hardware-focused production style which they first experimented with on their “Faux Polynesia” EP on Phonica White. This stylistic turning point encouraged further exploration into this direction, discovering new processes to make genuinely unique dance music that focuses on the idea that the best sounds are not imagined and then created, they are discovered.

Based out of their 38East studio in Bow East London the pair have been fervidly developing their process, releasing a string of records on respected labels such as Shall Not Fade, Phonica White and more.

Kassian’s vision for the label is to give a platform to emerging talent within the underground scene whilst also creating a home for their own output. They would like to encourage artists to explore their boundaries and begin to build a community based around the sound.

On the Edge records are proud to present the repressing of the stone cold classic ‘St Martin / Tension’ from one of the label’s most celebrated artists, Djrum. The original pressing was only Djrum’s second release, back in 2010 and he has since become one of the UK’s most influential producers and DJs.

Produced in 2009 entirely from samples, a wide range of influences are elegantly explored across the record. Dub, Techno, and garage tropes from the post-dubstep era meet more esoteric sounds from jazz, modern classical, and avantgarde music.

'St Martin’ on the A Side is nothing short of an absolute masterpiece. Clocking almost 10 minutes, it’s a journey of sounds produced and arranged to the highest order. The sub bass is bursting through the low end, giving warmth and power to balance the delicate percussion and blissful melodics. On the flip is ‘Tension’: another classic Djrum track that runs over 8 and a half minutes of impressive production continuing a similar linage as ‘St Martin’, only with an eerier atmosphere and that all important Djrum trail of thought that is placed somewhere far from this earth.

Djrum’s music has since been released on a variety of prominent labels, ranging from R&S and Illian Tape to Samurai and Ninja Tune.

This repress comes for the first time with a full artwork sleeve. Designed by Greek/Spanish artist Sofia Lambrou, the beautiful presentation elevates the record to the minimal psychedelic majesty it deserves.

1-800 Girls makes his eagerly awaited return to the Shall Not Fade catalog with a 4-track tribute to the early-hours ravers. With skittering drums, synth plucks and peppers of whimsical vocals, When U Call EP captures a sound at once blissfully nostalgic to 90s rave, and boldly forward-facing in its mutation of today's scene-defining sounds of UK Bass.

Although barely discernible underneath off-kilter synth stabs and squelching drums, Burial-esque vocal chops do their best to haunt the title track, colouring it with both a sense of melancholy and deliverance. On that same note, enter "OCB". Its stripped-back successor
is equally as moody yet somewhat more modest with a mournful melody and minimal drums.

The aptly-named "Start Over" welcomes a switch in mood. With high-pitched staccato vocals and an up-beat drum pattern, its trancey-tempered quality is not a million miles away from the music of Overmono. Finally, listeners of the EP's closer "Move With Me" need little more than the title's instruction as its 150 BPM and pop-adjacent vocals do all the talking.

Coming hot on the heels of his recent release on Future Retro, Basic Rhythm continues his return to his first passion, Drum & Bass. Basic Rhythm started buying Hardcore, Jungle and Drum & Bass back in the early ‘90s, eventually hosting a regular show on Rude FM in the late ‘90s before venturing out into other musical areas in the early 2000s. This single marks a return to the dark brooding menace and punchy breaks that only Drum & Bass does so well.

On the A side is the title track, Dread. A tense brooding affair that opens with lush strings and chopped breaks, evoking the dark theatrical menace of late ‘70s neo-noir cinema, before unleashing tumbling breaks and a chest rattling sub.

Upping the tempo slightly on the B side is And Soon The Darkness. It opens with a dark drone and stepping drums, punctuated with suspenseful strings, before letting loose the breaks and a huge bass line evocative of mid ‘90s Back 2 Basics but with a contemporary approach. This one is a dance floor smasher!

With support from scene stalwarts DJ Storm, Kid Drama, Tim Reaper, DJ Flight and more this 12” is bound to do some damage!
