Astrophonica maintain pace in 2020 as Philip D Kick returns to the label with the 6 track “As We Continue”. Following 2018’s “Pathways” Jim Coles aka Om Unit aka Philip D Kick adds some shine and sparkle to his already near perfect and persistent formula. Coles remains dedicated to blurring the lines and joining the dots. As we continue . . .
‘Drips’ sets the pace and opens the flood gates with a flowing groove and lingering bass womps like condensation off a low ceiling. ‘160909313’ steamrolls through with a constant Turbo drum machine drive accelerated by a non stop rolling bass riff. The doors are well and truly blown off in ‘Funk 160’ as a planet rocking breakbeat and infectious chord stabs set the pace with confidence and class. Balmy pads caress a lazy groove in ‘Summer Moods’ and conjure feelings of long evenings and ever lasting sunsets. The Riviera is all bit crushed pads and elite level breakbeat science while you enjoy the passing vistas. ’Clouds’ brings this episode to a close with a smooth glide through the stratosphere and beyond with 4/4 kicks and luscious bass arp.
‘This record for me reflects the ongoing conversation between cultures and styles where jungle meets footwork meets techno, 3 cultures that share more in common than per- haps people realise, and for me this is more of a in-depth exploration for example of sonic tropes more prevalent in the world of detroit techno than other previous records. ‘Clouds’ and ‘160909313’ for example being somewhat of an homage to Detroit, the birthplace of techno, yet another black music that changed the world.’ - Philip D Kick / Om Unit
Off the heels of a few successful digital compilations, newly found LA based label For The Heads proudly kicks off their vinyl series with a 4-track collaborative EP from Subtle Mind & mrshl. All 4 of these cuts bring freshness and originality to the ever-growing 140 sound and are a meticulous blend of styles given both of the artist's virtuosity and creative ability.
First, "Built The Same" sets the pace of the EP with luscious chords and a prolific melody all wrapped together by it's enticing low end. Next, the title track "Can You Hear It" is a weighty number focused on it's orbiting sub-bass and crisp percussion with a switch up that is sure to get any dance moving. On the B-side, an exceptional and unparalleled fusion of both modern synth-bass oscillations with the classical UK style groove and step of some jungle and garage is evident in "When The Rain Comes"; all of this pieced together nicely with a jazzy saxophone sequence. Rounding out the EP, "We're Alright Now" features a radiating, encircling melody that is sure to grab the attention of it's listeners with punching low end and soulful vocal shouts.
One of the hottest upcoming artists in the 140 spectrum, Fiend debuts on Infernal Sounds with the beautifully mesmerising Emeralds EP. The Bristol-based producer has previously released on the likes of J. Sparrow's Navy Cut and most recently on Chord Marauders, displaying his versatility and ease to produce tracks of various styles and soundscapes. This release is no different, acutely bending between the lighter textures with 'Emeralds', to the more heavy and soundsystem kicking 'Solar', whilst finding the perfect balance of light and dark in the B2 track, 'Omen'. To top it all off, Infernal Sounds have called on their cavalry and one of their elite in dub-master Bukkha has given the title track, 'Emeralds' his own spin to add another tier of depth to this already, magical EP. The aesthetic of the release is once again polished to perfection, with Emily Dayson Illustration returning to give the plate an extra special touch on the artwork centre labels.
Over the past year, the release has received heavy support from the likes of Truth, J:Kenzo, Sicaria Sound, Taiko and Quasar, among many others. It's one to add to your collection, so you can blast it at home, take it for a spin on the dance floor or even frame on your wall - a really special release from top to bottom, inside and out.
