Scissor and Thread regular Black Light Smoke returns to the Brooklyn label run by Francis Harris for a mini LP of raw, atmospheric house. The alias of Jordan Lieb, Emmy Award winning composer/producer/musician, Black Light Smoke drops City Life - six tracks of affecting, deep vibes.
'In Gold' is rich in analog warmth, a bubbling deep house roller that echoes some of the New York, Detroit and Chicago greats.
Title track 'City Life' is a stripped down rhythm track, populated with stabs, melodic flourishes, and beautifully arranged pads - as well as a killer vocal. 'Make My Piece' is built around a vocal hook and roughneck drum track, before opening up with crunchy percussion and a sick bassline. Next one is 'Up In This', starting on a dreamy tip, but exploding into life with Lieb's signature feel for propulsive rhythms and deep, warm tones.
'Without You' is a tougher proposition, using heavy compression and distortion to texture the track, while the digital bonus track 'Every Beat (No Regrets)' is a fitting end to the release - a woozy, after-hours come down vibe, wrapping up this journey.

Kornél Kovács' second album is on the way via Studio Barnhus, which he runs with Petter Nordkvist and Axel Boman. Stockholm Marathon sees the Swedish-Hungarian producer, who was born in the Swedish capital, "reflecting a lot on this beautiful, boring city I never quite manage to move away from," he says, after moving back last September. Kovács credits his "dearest Stockholm people" for making the LP his most collaborative and most personal release. That list includes jazz musician Niclas Skagstedt, Matt Karmil, Rebecca & Fiona and Malin Gabriella Nordin, who did the artwork. The LP, which arrives in April, is his second full-length, following 2016's The Bells, also released on Studio Barnhus.

Sammy Bananas, known mainly for his work on A-Trak's groundbreaking NYC label Fool's Gold flexes his versatility offering up 3 flavors of piano based, club ready dance tracks on his debut EP for Bastard Jazz, the "Piananana EP". The signature funky and quirky style which he developed over a decade of releases is still audible, but the material here is geared more towards foggy late night basements.
"Non-Stop" is built around hypnotic, syncopated stabs which slowly grow into a bass heavy stomper, while "Thrilla" meets somewhere between Bmore and Hardcore while still staying in the pocket. "Finesse" is a hauntingly soulful groove with a snaking analog bass line and Parisian producer Hugo LX, fresh off an EP with DJ Spinna, rounds out the release with a reserved and enticing take on "Non-Stop".

Cape Town duo Christian Tiger School provide the 3rd part of the Lissoms series. Both graduates of the Red Bull Music Academy and part of the Sónar line-up this summer - they've previously posted an LP for the mighty Tommy Boy & remixes for SubPop, and had their work remixed by luminaries like Mndsgn.
'If You Want To' embodies their sound and the fervent Cape Town beats scene aptly - esoteric UK influences sit amongst ambient soundscapes and a cracked breakbeat, pinned on a looped bassline - growing in intensity but using the most subtle of touches.
Gacha Bakradze’s version posits the track somewhere between slow-burning disco and krautrock, framing the character of the original with loose jams on his array of studio gear.
Finally, Edmondson's version is a minimal, 2-steppy take honed by the Berlin sounds which have pricked his ears for the last couple of years.

Fast emerging artist Kincaid has unveiled a new collaborative record with the respected British synth-pop act Blancmange. ‘Big Fat Head’ will land on Moscoman’s famed Disco Halal imprint. Clad with percussive textures, the release marks a father and son team-up with Kincaid (Joe Arthur) and father, Neil Arthur, via the Blancmange project. Accompanied by a remix from Moscoman and Trikk under the Nucat moniker, ‘Big Fat Head’ is turned into a chugging synth-wave melody. New York’s indie disco freaks Phenomenal Handclap Band is back with a second single on Toy Tonics: Jail. With remixes by Detroit’s Waajeed and Marcel Vogel of Lumberjacks in Hell. Including a club edit by Toy Tonics head honcho Kapote. The band was responsible for one of Toy Tonics’ biggest tracks in 2018: Judge Not: The Ray Mang version became a hit on open minded dancefloors around the globe: with support from DJ’s like DJ Harvey, Cassius and Gilles Peterson (who put it int his „best track of the year“ list) but also more house DJ’s like Berlin’s Keine Musik Crew, Soundstream or Superpitcher. The band’s members are kind of heroes to many connoisseurs of the funk/ disco scene. The band leader Daniel Collas was playing keys in Amy Winehouse legendary backing band. Other members are connected to Mark Ronson’s crew or San Francisco’s Stones Throw universe.. just to give u the bigger picture. With The Phenomenal Handclap Band they blend the unique vibe of 1970ies Power-Soul in the traditon of Charles Stepney and Rotary Connection with today’s new disco vibe. Parcels, Toro Y Moi, Roosevelt are not that far. Important fact: All played live, no samples. Mixed by the champs at DFA. The band is part of Toy Tonics’s masterplan to expand their dancevibes into more live played scenarios.. stepping out of the strict DJ context. Fun fact? Paul McCartney wrote the band a letter saying how much he loved their music when he first heard the band on BBC Radio 1.

Sometimes you produce a track with nothing but a dancefloor and a good sound system in mind. "Twelve Inch Jams" is offering you just that - strictly two A side tunes for the floor cut at 45 revolutions per minute. Jazz & Milk pays tribute to this classy release format with their new 12" vinyl series. Each record comes in a hand silk-screened printed and stamped sleeve!
The dreamteam of the highly successful first installment (JAMS001) teamed up again to share their love for raw and sample-based house music tunes produced on the MPC. Label artist Sam Irl and the man behind Jazz & Milk, Dusty never fail when it comes to layering colorful sample fragments and enriching them with raw beats and deep synthesizer chords.
"Broken Spell" starts off with a super moody atmosphere that slowly opens up until it reaches its energetic peak with bright synth stabs and a smooth bassline before colorful arpeggios are drifting the track into other spheres. "Love Prelude" has a rather dreamy vibe but its deep chord progressions and rough bass drums and claps create a truly unique contrast and a hypnotic atmosphere on top of it, while a later incoming bouncy bassline and dubby sample parts eventually pull you in cosmic dimensions!

JMII makes serious music without the need to take himself too seriously. In 'Modulations', the Barcelona producer keeps building an increasingly solid and personal sound in his more accomplished collection of music to date. Five tracks that display a universe filled with inventive synth lines, smart production and quirky references to the "day to day of producing music and the strange world of those who like to read machine manuals and learn to program new synths". Take 'Synthesize',the EP's opening track, in which he samples every gearhead's favourite YouTube video. But far from relying on a gimmick, the track is a lesson in how to make trance the right way. 'Communication' emerged from the same studio sessions, but has a much deeper feel, blending ethereal chords and melodies with voices that seem to get lost in a black hole. 'Modulation' is probably the boldest track JMII has ever produced. Lead by a nasty bass line and punctuated by martial percussions and menacing strings, it's one of those in-between genres cuts that can cause havoc in any kind of dancefloor. 'Polydays' is another great example of JMII's approach to music: odd enough to avoid the cliche but not too overcomplicated to diminish its primal power. In other words, it's the kind of dance music we should always aim for. The 12" comes housed in a sleeve by Cologne-based designer Christian Schafer.

David Marston is a producer, DJ, musician, and guitarist hailing from the vibrant Caribbean island of Jamaica. He takes a multifaceted approach to his music, and has worked to achieve a sound that is a fusion of multiple genres, including, but not limited to, house, hip-hop, disco, jazz, as well as reggae. During a six-month stint in Jamaica in 2016, Marston reconnected with a close friend and fellow musician, Craig Williamson, and the pair began writing music that would become the basis of Marston's first full length album. With the album set to be released in early 2019, Marston has endeavored to put together a special 12" to showcase the club-friendly side of his music with a selection of the album's dance cuts.
The A-side of the vinyl kicks off with the title track, "Feeling You", which features Williamson's crooning voice over a hypnotic instrumental characterized by a swirling arpeggiated synth, punchy bass hits, and stomping drums. To round off the A-side, Italian DJ and production duo, Lowheads, give the aforementioned track a fresh makeover with their lively classic house remix and dub version. The flip side of the record consists of two instrumental tracks. The first, "Ragamuffin", is a mesmerizing four to the floor tune constructed around an Indian raga sample. The final number, "On My Mind" is an off-kilter house groove with rolling keys, garage style drums, and a soaring lead. Taken together, the 12" album 'sampler' is a robust yet tantalising collection of club-ready tunes.

After releasing some sleeper classics and essential cuts you never knew you needed on primo-labels such as !K7, Futureboogie, Hypercolour sibling Losing Suki, and Optimo’s Bucky Skank imprint (to name but four) Jabru comes correct for Tha’ Purp with his debut LP - Ill Conceived ; far and away the most extensive and vibrant exploration of his unique sound thus far.
From broken beat experiments and heart breaking neo soul ballads, to extended spaced out dubs and the odd dancefloor slammer - all aided by some top shelf vocal collaborators - there’s nary a sonic stone left unturned across the album’s comfortable runtime. This is no “jack of all trades” grab-bag of unrelated sounds optimised to appease jittery streaming types mind you. Nah. The record is curated deftly across its two act span (to a degree bordering on obsessive) to ebb & flow very much in the sequence it is presented in and not on “shuffle” but, should you chose to chronologically defile our product, you’re still in for a winner; as the entire album is held very much in blissful unity by Jabru’s deft ear for soulful colour, emotive arrangements, Proper Songs and a downright smutty thumping groove.
Defiantly released on lovingly crafted yet financially suicidal gatefold double vinyl Ill Conceived is not just an album title: It’s an album title and / or accurate assessment of trying to make a living from producing physical music in 2019).
