The first notes of Relapse’s “Underground Rave Hits for a Shuttered Club” are obscured with abrasive noise. For this Pinecone Moonshine album, the Bristol based musician known for drum and bass drew from many influences. Melodies and harmonies suggest ideas from extreme metal, blues, folk, and unique medieval, ritual notations. The album ranges from slower tempos like the funky 100 bpm “Curse, or a Swan” up to the 200 bpm breakcore “Hitroll Beat Heart.”
Percussion across the album consists of synthesized bass layered with household objects. “Two Worlds Colliding…” and “Cognitive Dissonance” which are in the realm of drum and bass are kept sparse allowing a focus on the found percussion and bassline melodies. The collaborations as D n G feature guitar and swirl in electronic haze. Relapse worked with Greef on the opening track “Oh God” which is between noise and ambient.
The album ends with “Generic Excuse” leaving the listener with a poignant melody of distorted bell sounds.

Greenleaf’s Seventeen starts with the emphasis on a single drum break. A few scattered notes introduce the harmony. The tone hints at Soul. With uninterrupted rhythm, the bassline melody takes over with a second drum break at the drop. The breakdown features singing and the full melody pieced together reinforcing an uplifting vibe before getting back to drums and bass.
Jaskin builds a dense field of analog synths and growling bass sounds for his half-step Drum and Bass track The Drag. A punchy drum kit sets the main percussion with sampled drum breaks creating variations.
Los Angeles’s 6Blocc brings an aggressive sound with Lunatik. Light percussion and whispers of dialog make for a big dynamic change when the heavy kick drum pattern starts. Around the kicks, the drums are fragmented and frequently changing along with the bassline pattern. Miscellaneous sound effects hint at Ragga Jungle roots.
Profane’s Far Side hits with the raw funk and soul samples. The drum break is falling over itself. The underlying rhythm sometimes comes from the guitar loop, or the steady sub hits, or a slowed down, steady funk break. The progression is a journey bringing you back to where you began.
Greenleaf and RTP perform nine minutes of synthesizers. The moving of switches and dials tune in and out of rhythmic patterns. Through filters and delays, the piece goes from being several voices to one and back progressing something like a symphony.

Part two of the remix series starts with Dave Hoax taking on the Jungle influenced Without Purpose originally by Earl Grey. The signature pads set the background as Dave turns up the distortion on the drum breaks. The sub is low and rattling and the variations and edits on the rhythm are frequent.
Relapse’s rolling eight minute Drumfunk track from 2011 is transformed by Shins-K into a 4/4 grungy Techno track. The original drum break is splintered with filters and pitch shifts layered over the kick drums. The distorted pads surge in aggressively and then thin out into the background.
Fushara takes the title track from the Temnota EP in an uplifting introspective direction by adding new harmonies. As the number of layers in the harmony grows more complex, the percussion switches rapidly between the different drum kits.

Phuture-T dials up Dub and Drumfunk from the samples of Greenleaf’s New Orleans influenced track, Forward Motion. The beats are more broken and the effect delays are longer. The signature interview recording has been chopped and used as downbeats on the progression changes.
With melodic and rolling percussion, Earl Grey creates a cheerful vibe to start the Ominous Maze remix. The intro leads straight into the body of the track when the contrabass becomes the dominant instrument making the tone tougher. The drum breaks transition through several change ups and syncopated edits.
Metro gives MHC a new treatment with extra field recordings and an extended break down. The Jungle influence is stronger with bigger, funkier subs. Classic break beats are layered with sound effects and noises all supporting the main rhythm of the bassline.

Martsman returns to Pinecone Moonshine bringing his signature basslines and hinting at jazz and dub influences for two Drum and Bass tracks. Starting with pleasant jazz chords, a few guitar strums, and rolling percussion from sticks and light hi-hats, Capital-K switches to a stuttering, pulsating bassline. Several layers of percussion create a live feeling over the highly syncopated drum loop. Zeezer’s squelching bassline and high pitch sound effects are offset by warm, echoing dub stabs. The drums mostly focus on a dominant kick drum and 4/4 hi-hats in a dub-techno style. The progression is guided by excerpts of break beats including the Amen break in the second half.
