Blind Prophet returns to Dub-Stuy with the Clash EP, showcasing his versatility and increasing maturity as a producer. Following two previous 12” singles for the label, the Portland producer takes full flight with a 5-track EP exploring various tempos and styles of bass music, old and new. To take us along the journey, he is accompanied by various friends from the global sound system scene including Rider Shafique, Redders, Titus 12, and Tailored Sound from Bristol, Tenor Youthman from Russia, and GREAZUS from Vancouver.
“Dollar Trap” begins the EP with some jazzy digital dub vibes. Tailored Sound accompanies Blind Prophet’s laid-back riddim with his saxophone, playing against the relaxed chatting style of Tenor Youthman who expounds on the dangers of money.
“Clash”, the EP’s title track is Blind Prophet’s dedication to early 90s UK steppas, ominous vibes with lots of space in which the bass and drums can stretch... This is a warning! Closing the A side is a collaboration with the duo GREAZUS that sees the three producers mixing up jungle breakbeats, half time dropouts, and dub heavy bass. The tune is completed by Redders, who mixes up vocal stylings in his own inimitable way.
“Conquer Yuhself” opens up the B side with Blind Prophet’s take on the classic dub techno sound, a slowly unfolding and immersive rhythm track with floating strings and washes of reverb and echo on which Rider Shafique brings some uplifting spoken word about overcoming self-doubt and believing in yourself. Think classic Rhythm & Sound vibes updated for 2020. Closing the EP is “Delay The Storm,” a hip-hop beat with tinges of reggae on which Titus 12 adds dubbed out scratches as well as some harmonica melodies in the finest Augustus Pablo tradition.

The fourth instalment of Dub-Stuy’s riddim series takes a slight detour from its modern dancehall focus with a darker, hip hop influenced riddim featuring contributions from an international cast of vocalists affiliated with the label.
Santa Muerte Riddim puts forward a new sound for the series with a fresh beat courtesy of Brooklyn producer Jonah Freed. The slower 80bpm riddim combines a hypnotizing string melody, eerie sweeps and punching boom bap kicks bringing to mind the heydays of 90’s NYC reggae hip-hop or classic Bristol fusion styles (think the Wild Bunch, Portishead or, more recently, the Young Echo crew). In fact the riddim has a direct tie to Bristol. After Freed first made it, while studying in Chicago when he was just 18, he sent it to Bristol MC Rider Shafique and the two eventually connected for a show in town where Young Echo member Kahn wheeled up the song. After that it was clear this was a riddim that needed to be put out into the world.
Taking turns on the vocal tracks are three artists with a wide stylistic range. Bristol’s Rider Shafique kicks things off with striking confidence, his laid-back flow flexing between boasts and elevated reflections to make ‘Santa Muerte’ a new outernational standard. Next up is veteran NYC artist Jahdan Blakkamoore who showcases his versatility and delivers an uplifting call to leave violence behind on ‘Liberation Over Liberace’. Pupajim from Stand High Patrol takes on the last version with “Open Mindedness”, an unexpected rendition of the riddim laced with a layer of Rhodes harmonies. With his unmistakable vocal style, the french MC urges the music industry to break down musical barriers and embrace the diversity of styles and sounds.
To echo Pupajim’s lyrics, the Santa Muerte Riddim is a testament to the rich history of fusion and eclecticism in sound system culture.

a2. Jahdan Blakkamoore - Liberation Over Liberace
b1. Pupajim - Open Mindedness

Brooklyn-based label and sound system collective Dub-Stuy prepares for the summer with a brand new EP alongside Jahdan Blakkamoore, who first appeared on the label’s “Pool Party” single back in 2014 and again in 2017 on Von D’s Wicked Scam EP. This time around Jahdan is front and center, flexing the creativity and versatility that has kept him at the cutting edge of Jamaican music for more than two decades: whether collaborating with hip-hop icons like Smiff-N-Wessun and Snoop Dogg or with global bass providers such as Major Lazer, Liondub and Dutty Artz (who first introduced Jahdan and Dub-Stuy!).
The Linkage EP is a family affair, born after Jahdan and Dub-Stuy connected for a gig in Montreal in December 2018. The energy and vibrations from their performance that night inspired both parties to discuss a new label project. Soon enough, Dub-Stuy had sent Jahdan a pack of dancefloor-minded riddims and beats crafted by in-house producer DJ Madd. Within a few days, Jahdan locked himself up in a studio, writing and recording the five songs that make up the EP in a burst of creativity. Dub-Stuy then enlisted Bay Area based producer Kush Arora to mix the tracks, putting the finishing touches to a showcase of deft songwriting and melody-driven singing that has made Jahdan a favorite of many.
On “Absolutely” and “Properly” Jahdan celebrates the fun and vibes of a good session, switching effortlessly between singing with an irresistible lilt to rapid-fire lyrics against revamps of two timeless dancehall riddims - “Hot Milk” and “African Beat.” The results are surefire party starters! “Sort Out” taps out a syncopated skanking riddim to keep the dance going while the rest of the EP addresses more serious themes with Jahdan reaching for the deeper parts of his range. The hip-hop infused “Round of Applause” reflects on everyday struggles, and the EP’s namesake track “The Linkage” draws for deeper bass as Jahdan calls for unity.

Ras G and Moresounds explore the outer reaches of sound system culture for Dub-Stuy’s new collaborative series of EPs. Brooklyn-based label Dub-Stuy kicks off 2018 with the inaugural release of a new EP series dedicated to unearthing and celebrating the outer reaches of sound system culture. Taking its cue from the classic dub releases where two producers would face off with their own versions, Dub-Stuy’s Meets series brings together artists who have a clear dub influence but do not operate solely within the sphere of the dub and reggae world. The first such meeting is between Los Angeles beat supremo Ras G (Brainfeeder, Stones Throw) and Paris junglistic dub scientist Moresounds (Cosmic Bridge, Astrophonica).
Ras G Meets Moresounds features two brand new productions from each artist exploring the more experimental side of dub. On his side of the release Ras G freaks traditional dub riddims in a hip-hop style by slowing the bpm down, amping up the bass and smothering the tracks with echo and reverb. “Gorilla Glue” adds animal sounds and a hypnotizing flute melody reminiscent of Augustus Pablo, while “Global Shit-uation” goes deeper by juxtaposing bright keys with a wall of sirens and computer noises, as if Sun Ra had landed in Kingston for a jam with Tubby.
For his half of the release Moresounds taps into the melting pot of energy he’s become best known for, a perfect blend of dance music, hip-hop and dub. “We A Tribe” brings together traditional dub melodies with menacing synth lines, a steady kick snare pattern and a rowdy bassline. “Deep Base” taps into the steppers vibe with a marching drum beat and floating percussion rubbing against ominous melodies and an ocean of sampled sounds.
A celebration of the timeless impact of dub on modern music, Ras G Meets Moresounds shows how versatile dub music can be today and how far it has come from its Kingston roots. Strap in, light one up and get ready for a deep dub dive.

Paris-based producer Von D debuts on Dub-Stuy with a four-track EP of hair-raising and socially-conscious dub music boasting a cast of world-class vocalists and musicians.
The EP centers around its title track, a spacious and heavy riddim with a deadly groove, live guitar, and a stunning lyrical turn from NYC’s Jahdan Blakkamoore. Showing his versatility, Jahdan adapts seamlessly to the riddim’s contortions to deliver a damning statement of the wicked scam politicians and the 1% are running on the rest of us. “Liberation over Liberace!”
Continuing the social theme of the title track, London’s self-styled future dancehall singer Don Cotti lends his rugged voice to ‘Mek A Truce’. The track unfolds somewhere in between song and dub version, with horns and sound effects taking turns between Cotti’s incantations for people to “mek a truce” regardless of race or religion. The last collaboration on the EP sees Von D reach back to the music’s foundation with a vocal from Lone Ranger, a Jamaican deejay who began his career with Coxsone’s Studio One in the 1970s. On ‘Till A Morning’, he shows off his finely-honed chatting by inviting all to come and dance over a jumping riddim featuring live guitar, bass and piano.
Closing the EP is a sample of the legendary Bunny Lee talking about King Tubby and Lee Perry birthing dub before Von D unfurls his own studio experimentation on ‘Surrealiste Skank’, a dedication to the timeless power of dub music.
Wicked Scam further cements Von D’s talent for combining an authentic sound with a modern ear. The bass envelopes the listener without ever choking them, the melodies uplift the soul, and the lyrics feed the mind.

Dub-Stuy links Bukkha with UK grime stalwart Killa P for a dark, sound killing anthem.
Dub-Stuy expands on their vision for 21st century sound system music with a new 12” that brings together resident producer Bukkha and one of grime’s most recognisable voices, Killa P . The result is a deadly cut that takes no prisoners and is backed by an equally heavy instrumental.
‘Death Chat’ is arguably one of Dub-Stuy’s most ambitious collaborations to date. Bukkha crafts a dub meets grime riddim that builds from filtered keys into a ten-ton heavy monster. Killa P, who has collaborated with The Bug and is fresh from a turn on Sir Spyro’s ‘Topper Top’, delivers cutting lyrics in his instantly recognizable patois-inflected style, with each bar building tension toward a sonic climax.
Backing up this dancefloor sureshot is ‘Ethiopian Dub’, an instrumental that samples its vocal and melodic hook from an obscure dubplate and whirls both around a steady beat and bass line solid enough to punch through walls.

Dub-Stuy’s riddim series returns with a fresh take on a Jah Shaka classic
Dub-Stuy returns with the second installment of their riddim series in which the Brooklyn-based collective pays homage to the tradition of Jamaican dancehall riddims with a fresh modern twist and versions from an international line-up of vocalists.
Following an update of King Jammy’s Punanny riddim on the first release of the series, Dub-Stuy is taking on yet another classic. This time, DJ Madd brings the classic Kunta Kinte riddim into the 21st century with rolling drums, floating percussion, and weighty bass anchoring the timeless and irresistible melody that has come to define the riddim for generations of fans. First brought to the attention of UK dub fans by the mighty Jah Shaka , and originally recorded by a little known band from Battersea, Kunta Kinte has become a staple of dub music’s evolution, with its eponymous flute melody making numerous appearances over the decades in both underground and mainstream hits. For their 2017 edition, Dub-Stuy has brought three different vocalists from Jamaica and Europe to voice the riddim in a positive stance: Kingston legend Burro Banton preaches to the youth on ‘Nah Sell Out’; Rider Shafique, whose unique voice and delivery has been a hallmark of the Bristol scene for the past few years, travels Over The Oceans to celebrate the links between worldwide sound system fans; and finally France’s Shanti D takes a break from his work with OBF to bring it all together Inna Different Style.

UK legends Brother Culture and Vibronics meet new blood Bukkha and Madplate Sound for a 12” of deep steppers vibrations.
Dub-Stuy Records kicks off 2017 in fine style with another heavyweight 12” release that brings together four artists from America, Italy, and England for a transcontinental dub collaboration inspired by Jah Shaka sessions. ‘Obliterate’ sees American producer Bukkha return to the label in collaboration with the Italian duo of Madplate Sound and longstanding UK dub legend Vibronics on remix duty. Brixton-based vocalist and regular Dub-Stuy collaborator B rother Culture provides the vocals.
After hearing Dub-Stuy’s first 12”, ‘Back To Africa’, Bukkha was inspired to create something with a similar traditional steppers style. He sent the project to Madplate Sound (a young duo who have released on Moonshine and worked with Italian vocalist Marina P) and together they crafted the ‘Obliterate’ riddim, a deep and meditative track featuring earth-shattering bass and militant snares. Brother Culture then added lyrics that reflect on history and call on listeners to obliterate evil, chase away doubt, and take a proud and strengthening stance. The song is delivered in a classic three-part format with original vocal, vocal dub, and instrumental dub. On the flip side, UK producer Vibronics - who connected with Dub-Stuy after they shared a bill in France - delivers ‘Obliterated Version’, his own three-part reinterpretation of the original, expanding the track further with additional instrumental layers and rousing melodies while keeping the bass pressure high.

Dub-Stuy Records closes 2016 with one last 12” from Californian producer Dubamine who lends his new school dub touch to a classic- Tristan Palmer ’s ‘Joker Smoker’. Together the pair have concocted a stripped back, weighty instrumental that brings to mind classic eyes-down vibes from the likes of Mala and Skream. The pair met in Santa Cruz and their collaboration shows the strength of a new generation of local producers picking up from the trails blazed by the likes of Matty G in the past decade. Brooklyn’s Tour de Force (TDF) begin 2016 with an update to one of their best, and most loved, dubplate weapons. Soundboy Prayer was written in late 2013 and has spent the past few years as a centerpiece of TDF sets, wreckin’ havoc on the Dub-Stuy system with its iconic Johnny Osbourne vocal sample, trampling horns, and dark melodies. Consistent support from DJs and crowd reaction convinced TDF to dust off the riddim and give it a full release. The official 12” refreshes the production with added bass weight, a new arrangement, and a cavernous dub version.
Backing the original and its dub are two remixes from producers within the worldwide sound system community whose approach echoes TDF’s blend of reggae and bass music. Chopstick Dubplate’s Jacky Murda, who has worked with Barrington Levy, Top Cat, and Johnny Osbourne himself, was a natural fit to capture the junglist vibe of the original and turn it into an energetic jungle remix that begs for the rewind. Poland’s Radikal Guru, one of the brightest lights of the European dub community, provides the second remix, keeping things dubby and nice with a blend of reggae and dubstep that emphasises catchy string melodies and a weighty bass line. “Radikal Guru’s approach to blending traditions has been an inspiration for us,” says TDF Q-Mastah, “so he was a natural choice for this release.”

DJ Madd Collaborates with Brooklyn’s Dub-Stuy Records in an experimentation of sounds and styles rooted in sound system culture.
In their commitment to forging new pathways through the histories of roots, riddim and rigs, Dub-Stuy Records has again taken the road less traveled and unearthed fresh sounds. International bass music producer D J Madd b rings his dubstep-gone Brooklyn dubwise fusion to the table in his new two-track single release entitled K ingdom.
The USA-based, Hungarian-born DJ’s sound is diversifying as he harkens back to the bone-shaking basslines and the lowest sonic lows associated with his classic dubstyle production. On both K ingdom a nd its B-side B rooklyn Rudeboy, Madd experiments with an unorthodox tempo given his 140bpm background. Using elements reminiscent of Drum and Bass, Jungle and Footwork, he combines 808 bass and rolling snares with his hallmark sound inspired by Reggae Dub and sound system music.
Given Dub-Stuy’s dedication to searching for new connections in a contemporary Sound System-inspired soundscape, the collaboration between the Brooklyn based label and DJ Madd came naturally. Eager to enter the Brooklyn dialog, it is no secret that DJ Madd derives inspiration from Dub-Stuy’s custom sound system. “ Sound system to me is when you step into a venue and you see that those boxes weren't made in a factory. It always has that special touch when you meet someone and they start to tell a story how they started to build it with their own hands. All the energy that went into it and now you're getting to play on it!”

On their new single “Back to Africa”, NYC’s Tour De Force links up with Jamaican MC Ranking Joe and Brooklyn’s future bass producer Doctor Jeep

Together, they deliver a thunderous anthem, bringing together TDF’s heavyweight production style with Ranking Joe’s wailing vocals scattered with his trademark speedy tongue twisters. The vocal track is complemented by a dub version and a dancefloor-driven remix by Brooklyn’s up and coming producer D octor Jeep. With “Back to Africa”, the brooklyn duo builds on their vision of f orging the intersections between classic reggae dub and the local sounds of Brooklyn-bread bass music... always with high fidelity sound in mind!
“Slave masters took us away from Africa, brought us down in the Caribbean. They took away our language and our culture”. To complement the seriousness of the lyrical theme, T our De Force has crafted a militant beat driven by marching drum patterns underpinned by a hammering synth bassline. The dub versions adds even more bass weight, sparsely interjecting delayed vocals and building up to an echoed out frenzy. Known for his affinity for tropical bass, 808’s, breakbeats and UK grime, D octor Jeep reinvents the track into a tribal dance friendly banger, adding to the release’s overall dynamic sound.
